Say youve got a huge presentation in front of all your colleagues; youre nervous, youve got quite a bit of stress leading up to the presentation. That stress is completely normal, and reallyprobably useful in certain situations since it can make you more alert and careful. After the presentations over you feel the stress start to fade away, right? Well.for 3% of the population, the stress doesnt go away, and maybe that stress isnt even brought on by a specific event and is always just sort of always there. Either way,.
At this point its considered to be anxiety. that anxiety might even get worse over time, and causes things like chest pains or nightmares. Sometimes the anxietys so severe that it causes someone to be anxious about leaving the house or doing everyday things, like going to work or school. This anxiety may be a sign of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, sometimes shortened to GAD. GADs characterized by excessive, persistent, and unreasonable anxiety about everyday things, like money, family,.
Work, and relationships; even sometimes the thought of getting through the day causes anxiety. If the anxietys persistent, then it doesnt seem to go away, if its excessive, its usually more than someone else might feel, and if its unreasonable, they probably shouldnt have a reason to feel anxious about it. People who have GAD might even understand that their anxieties are excessive and unreasonable, but they feel its out of their control and dont quite know how to stop it. People.
With severe gad might be completely debilitated and have trouble with the simplest daily activities, or they might be only mildly affected and be able to function socially and hold down a job. Sometimes the feelings might worsen or improve over time. In addition to having feelings of worries and anxiety, other symptoms include edginess and restlessness, difficulty concentrating or feeling like the mind just goes blank, and also irritability. These psychological symptoms can also lead to physical manifestations.
Of symptoms like digestive problems from eating more or eating less. they might also have muscle aches and soreness from carrying tension in their muscles. Finally difficulty sleeping is a really common symptom that can have a serious impact on physical wellbeing, since the bodys not resting and can lead to issues of chronic fatigue. Although the decision that someones worry is excessive and unreasonable has a subjective quality, diagnosing GAD is aided by the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders,.
Or dsmv, this manual gives a list of criteria to meet in order to be diagnosed with gad. First, the excessive worry and anxiety has to have been present for more days than not over the course of 6 months. In other words, a person should have the symptoms of excess or unreasonable worry on 90 or more days out of 180 days. Generally, people cant quantify or track their feelings in that way, so again, this is meant to offer a general guideline, right? Okay secondthe person finds it hard to control their anxiety, meaning that they.
Have a hard time calming themselves or selfsoothing to help themselves regain control over their feelings. Third, an adult must have three or more of the symptoms listed previously. In children though, typically defined as schoolage, so between 6 and 18 years old, only one symptom is needed for the diagnosis of GAD. Another criteria is that the anxiety causes impairment in important daily activities like school or work. For example, they might miss deadlines or find it difficult to even go to work because of their symptoms. Fifth, the symptoms are.
Not attributable to the physiologic effects of a drugs or medication, or due to a medical condition like hyperthyroidism which creates an excess of thyroid hormone, which can sometimes cause symptoms of anxiety and worry. Finally, their anxiety isnt better explained by another mental disorder like social phobia or panic disorder. Just like a lot of mental disorders, its unclear exactly why some individuals develop generalized anxiety disorder, but its thought to be a combination of genetic and environmental.
Anxiety and Depression Webinar Holistic Options
Well, welcome everyone. this is nik hedberg, and tonight were going to be talking about holistic options for depression and anxiety, a huge topic in the United States today. Millions and millions of Americans on antidepressants and medications for anxiety. And tonight were going to talk about some alternative options, some supplementation, some herbal medicine, and some other things to think about if you do suffer from depression and anxiety. And if you have a question at the end, you can just type it into the question area in.
The chat window, and ill get to those at the end of the presentation. when im done, well open it up for questions, so to speak, and if anyone has any questions or needs to clarify anything, well cover that in detail. So, first, lets just talk about some of the main causes of depression that we see and anxiety, the first one being chronic inflammation. And this really goes back to really the inflammation disrupting the neurotransmitters in the brain like serotonin and dopamine, norepinephrine.
And the inflammation can be from anything. it can be from food sensitivities, chronic infections, toxic metals, stress. Many, many things can create inflammation. Genetics, of course. Different amino acid deficiencies like tryptophan, which is the precursor to serotonin, and Ltyrosine, which is the precursor to dopamine. And a lot of the medications out there are targeting those neurotransmitters, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine because they do work. There.
Are other ways, though, to manipulate those neurotransmitters as well. And then, of course, whenever youre talking about depression and anxiety, we have to talk about the thyroid, and hypothyroidism can lead to anxiety or depression, and the same thing with hyperthyroidism. Not exercising enough definitely a contributor, especially to depression. Environmental toxins. Adrenal imbalances, so imbalances of cortisol, DHEA, and adrenaline. Gut inflammation. In.
The book, the second brain the talks about the intricate connections between the brain and the gut, and if there is inflammation in the gut or dysfunction in the gut, then many times theres also dysfunction in the brain. Different nutrient deficiencieswell talk about a few tonight. Gastrointestinal dysfunctionwe did a webinar I think a few months ago on how to heal leaky gut syndrome. And if you do have leaky gut or suspect that you do, youll probably want to check that.
Webinar out. food sensitivitiesthe big ones are really gluten, dairy, corn, soy, and eggs. Those are what we call kind of the big five. Those can certainly trigger anxiety, stress. And then, of course, toxic relationships. If there is someone in your life, a friend or a spouse, family, what have you, that can definitely create depression and anxiety. So the first one I want to mention is fish oil, and fish oil has a tremendous amount.
Of research behind it not only for depression and enhancing mood but for a variety of things. Fish oil is, of course, mainly omega3 fatty acids. And most Americans are eating too many omega6s and omega9s, so that creates inflammation when you have a deficit of omega3s, too many 6s and too many 9s, and that can definitely begin to affect the mood. Now its really important that when you supplement with fish oil, you take the naturally occurring triglyceride form. Most of the commercial products out there are the synthetic ethyl.
Ester form, and the ethyl ester form is not as well absorbed, and its not as well utilized by the body as the triglyceride form. So thats a really important point when youre supplementing with fish oil. The other thing with the overthecounter commercial fish oil products is that they can be contaminated sometimes with mercury or other toxins because the supplement industry, especially over the counter, is just not really well regulated, and so there are a lot of.
